Growing up with three brothers meant spending a great deal of time in bunk beds. I slept in cheap bunk beds from when I was old enough to be out of a crib until likely around age ten. Likely give or take a year or two, but I spent my fair share of time in a bunk bed.
Once I was old enough to have my own room and bed, I never looked back and always considered cheap bunk beds to be a childish bed design. That is, until we were reacquainted at university. Little did I know that many dorm rooms – even single rooms, use bunk beds as space saving beds so that the room seems bigger than it is.
After recently having another experience sleeping in bunk beds – this one was a very large twin over full bunk bed – I thought I’d look into the changes that have taken place over the last 15 years. It turns out that bunk beds for kids are not the only use, little did I know, there is a huge variety of these types of beds – here are just a few of the more popular ones. Bunk beds with stairs
This is the traditional bunk bed, at least as far as I’m concerned. Growing up, we always had bunk beds with stairs. I believe it had a couple sets of stairs or ladders so that we could easily and quickly get up and down. Looking back, I’m somewhat surprised that I was even able to get up and down ours. There are a lot of changes that have been made to make these stairs seem much safer now.
Bunk beds with stairs are typically the same size and are directly above each other. That said, I’m sure you can find different types that include a ladder or staircase.
L Shaped bunk beds
The first time I saw L Shaped bunk beds, it was in college. I didn’t have one my first year, but there were plenty of people who did, especially the people without a single dorm room. These beds were design to wrap around a corner of the room to save space.
Why use an L Shaped bunk bed?
The major reasons to use L-shaped bunk beds is to save space and so that the beds are not directly on top of each other. If you would rather wrap your bed around a corner in the room and give both bunks more room to sleep, this is a great option.
Twin over full bunk bed
If you are looking for a sleeping solution for you and your child in a tight spot this is it. If you have a one bedroom house or apartment, or even a two bedroom but want to be closer to your child while they are sleeping, the twin over full bunk bed is perfect. These beds provide all the benefits of saving space that normal bunk beds do, but they also give the luxury of having a full-sized bed on the bottom. You can get these in a variety of sizes from double to king,
Bunk beds with desk
Another bed first spotted in University. These bunk beds have come down in price considerably. I have slept in these beds before in college. They are also great for apartments if you do not have a lot of space in your room for both a desk and a bed.

The above desk is by far the nicest looking and easiest desk to install. If you are looking to combine a bed and desk, this is your best choice.
Needless to say I’m not an expert on beds, nor do I sleep in bunk beds at all anymore. That said, I have spent my fair share of time getting in and out of awkward and awesome bunk beds. I will be sure to share any new information if I think of it.
